There are a great number of how-to books in qualitative research, but very few why-to books. This lecture is the first lecture in an eleven lecture series that gets at the heart and spirit of why we do qualitative research. Each lecture stands alone, but the whole series gives the reader a fresh and strong new look at the ideas behind both the past and the future of qualitative research.

Gary Shank offers a clear and powerful working definition of qualitative research. His examples and citations are clear and insightful. Shank demonstrates his expertise and experience with qualitative research in his thoughtful comparisons with statistical research (the window) and self-reflection (the mirror) to reach the perfect metaphor, the lantern. The Spirit of Qualitative Research Lecture One Swimming in the Rainforest eBook Gary Shank Reviews
I am also a qualitative researcher, and I have noted this field moving towards losing its way. The important question of why we do qualitative research has been lost in its desire to prove itself worthy to quantitative researchers. This lecture is a highly engaging and provocative treatise about how those of us who do qualitative research can find our center and reason for doing this work. Very well written and highly recommended!
Gary Shank is a proponent of a nuanced and non-reifying approach to educational research, which gives its full meaning to the data considered from an interpretive, qualitative viewpoint. I give courses in qualitative research in Education within a semiotic orientation and fully agree with major stands Shank expresses considering the need to contextualize and historicize data through a deep inquiry into their discursive connotations, beyond the simple denotational aspects. The issue is to avoid simplistic structuralist methods of codification that often tend to replace a deeper understanding of the research corpus. I find Shank's new series appealing in terms of both format and content, and I recommend it to either beginning researchers in search for a new perspective that is respectful of the deeper meaning of discourse or seasoned researchers in search for a reframing of their professional activity.
An excellent read for anyone who conducts or is interested in qualitative research.
Wanted avenue into Qualitative Research but found most texts dull and confusing. This was an enjoyable read with good insights. I am starting the second book now.
As a beginning qualitative researcher, I enjoyed this lecture. I believe it is important to have a foundation to ground research and Shank provides an engaging exploration into the purpose of qualitative inquiry. I love that he congruently uses a qualitative style to explore this topic.
